The past few columns have been filled before getting the Green Eagle Certificates and new American Portfolio enrollments listed. Now is a good time to catch up. Did you know you do not have to be a darkroom printer to join the American Portfolios activities? There is a place for you if you are into computer printing. You may also have your negatives or slides commercially printed. This is such an excellent learning opportunity; anyone actually making pictures should participate. Picture of the Month Contest was fortunate to have James T. Duncan as judge in a recent competition. We like to give a brief statement from the POM judges as to their opinions and/or advice on contest photography. James feels the photographer should look for and produce prints that please themselves and not try for the print that will appeal to the judges. If you like the photo yourself, you may consider it good. POM is still asking potential judges of their monthly contests to step forward and volunteer to serve for one month. Also, if you know someone who would and could, please send his/her name and address to the POM directors, Anthony, APSA, and Lois Winston, 344 Jackson Ave., Morgantown, WV 26501-6614.
Maltas exceptional printmaker Joseph Vella, APSA, FRPS was the featured exhibitor with 30 prize-winning mono prints shown at the Near East University in Turkish Northern Cypress during their 2nd International Photography Days. He has had one-man shows in Russia, Belgium, Germany and Maltas National Museum of Fine Arts. The high-point Pictorial Print of the Month (POM) scores are listed in their respective categories.
Portrait Portfolios suddenly found they were losing commentators for the popular Figure Study Portfolio. Coming to the rescue was none other than our Jim Turnbull, Hon. PSA, FPSA. Jim is a skilled photographer with experience in many photography areas. The very serious attempts at fine art photography will be made much easier with Jims capable comments on work offered in the portfolio. POM announces they will be holding the Peoples Choice contest again this year. If you have not already sent in your winning 1st and 2nd place prints, then now is the time to do so. Peoples Choice is an interesting contest, as all PSA members attending the Conference in September have the opportunity of viewing all of the submitted winning prints from the preceding years contest. They vote for their choice in both black and white and color. The winners are announced at the Awards Banquet. POM also announces two new members: Minnie Travis of El Paso, TX competing in Color Print Class and Yong-ran Zhu of New Berlin, WI competing in both mono and colon Yong-ran authored an article in the January issue of the PSA Journal (page 18) and another in the May issue (page 35).

September Dialogues: Duchamp, CorneR, Johns, Rauschenberg * Dallas: Dallas Museum of Art, Sept. 4-Jan. 8 Four major 20thcentury artists, two of them gay: Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg form half of this aesthetic discourse. Cartoonist Al Capp (1909-79), creator of “Lil Abner,” once said that abstract art was “a product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.” However, bewilderment while staring at modern art is altogether unique to the gallery and museum experience. I, myself, a resolute aficionado of modern art, have occasionally shied away from the too unusual. One time in Seattle, at the University of Washingtons art gallery, I was invited by a gallery docent to remove my shoes and walk through a conceptual work of art that I found distasteful, if not disgusting. With a shudder I declined the invitation and moved on. On March 1, I visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to review its exhibitions . The 5th floors exhibit, “Treasures of Modern Art: The Legacy of Phyllis Wattis at SFMOMA,” had several of the worlds icons of modern art on display. Tracey Emin moves to the next stage of her career with a retrospective covering the art that she has produced since she attended the Royal College of Art in the late 1980s. Her habit of persistently raiding her own life for material makes this exhibition, even more than most previous shows, a kind of pictorial autobiography. In addition to the unmade bed that provoked such a fuss a few years ago, there will be sculptures, paintings, films and a room-sized installation called Exorcism of the Last Painting I Ever Made. At first look, Eichhorn Jewelry store in downtown Decatur looks like hundreds of other jewelry stores in hundreds of other communities across the country with brightlylit show windows on either side of the front entrance to entice customers. On closer examination, however, its not youre typical jewelry store, it is a very special place. Patrons first impression of the 35 yearold store is “WOW!” One-hundred yearold vertical display cases with huge windows that slide up on the north wall are expertly lit to highlight eclectic groupings of jewelry. Unlike most stores, the main showcases, the ones John Eichhorn started his business with in 1965, are situated in the center of the showroom rather than along the sides and are also antiques. The floor cases are from 1929 when Keller Jewelry was located in the Eichhorn building. The diamond sorting table in a back room is a 100-year-old wooden library table that was left behind by the previous owner of the building who was also a jeweler. From the showroom one can peer down a short hall at the end of the store to the large steel door of the vault where the company places its valuable inventory every evening. The vault used to be part of the First National Bank in Adams County, which was the only one that didnt shut down in the crash of 1929.
Just as some animals will offer in courtship a morsel of food, the bowerbird and others make gifts of feathers and flowers and all manner of colorful trifles. There can be tittle doubt that the first tokens of human affection were of a simitar nature and were worn as treasured souvenirs. With the recognition of the intrinsic qualities of shelfs and stones, the evolution of jewely had begun. In the Middle Ages patronage was largely in the hands of the church, and a good proportion of medieval jewelry is of a devotional nature. Not until the second half of the fifteenth century was there an emphasis on the aphrodisian themes of antiquity. The refinement of Italian Renaissance jewelry was a result of the broadly based apprenticeship of artists, which required a mastery of drawing, engraving, chasing, casting, enameling, and niello work. Thus Donatello and Ghiberti became sculptors, Ghirlandaio and Andrea del Sarto became painters, and Pollaiuolo and Verrocchio worked in several mediums, returning to goldsmith work and jewelry at will. The fashion for decorative emblems and badges was taken up with enthusiasm in the courts of Europe during the Renaissance. Both devotional and amorous allusions are common in these decorative devices, which closely echo contemporary jewel work. One of the most charming designs for an emblem shows Cupid rashly pursuing the sweetness of the honeycomb only to be stung by the bees who have made it (Pl. XIII), a poignant allegory of the pleasure and pain of love. The Netherlandish hat badge in Plate IX is an emblem depicting a woman choosing between two suitors surrounded by a motto that can be translated “love is something but money is everything.”

Its not unusual to find a lot of sports fans who have sports memorabilia collections, and who love to spend time enjoying and nurturing memories of those great moments. But how many people actually have an opportunity to turn that hobby into a career? He had worked for the same company for 18 years, working his way up from a construction electrician to a facilities engineer after obtaining his degree. He was even charged with designing, implementing and managing a company-sponsored recycling program. The program became number one in the county, and received an award from the mayor of San Diego. So maybe something would come up with recycling, or maybe he would just stay with facilities engineering. At any rate, he was determined to keep a good attitude, put the old job behind him, and prepare for the next step. His company told him about the Career Center and its no-cost employment assistance. This was good news and he took advantage of enrolling right away and starting his job search before ever becoming unemployed.

A little more than a mile into the Slickrock Trail in Moab, Utah–one of the most breathtaking mountain-biking rides in the world–my nerves began to fray. As I approached a mounded lip of the canyon, the stencil lettering between the white lines that mark the trail gave me fair warning: DANGER. Maybe the guidebooks were right. Maybe the Slickrock is only for expert shredders, as mountain bikers are known. I plunged over the edge, made the sharp left-hand turn into the canyon and rode down the steep rock face. Looking ahead of me, I saw a technical hairpin turn. Some-how, I managed to control the full-suspension bike and swing wide enough to nail the turn. Then I skidded down the face of the trail, turned left again and surfed across the slickrock, a sandpapery surface that provides traction that is positively unreal. Given the steepness of the trail and the fact that youre riding across the slope rather than down, you expect the bike to slip out from under you. But the traction of the rock keeps you upright. It felt like riding a 9-foot Pacific wave. Exhilarated, I smiled and exhaled.
Today, Craig, 25, is one of the most insane guys in the mountain-biking circuit–earning himself six national championships, a place in the World Cup top five, and high hopes for a gold medal at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Beijing. I dont subscribe as much to the Olympic dream as the end all, be all, Craig told MF. Its more important to be an athlete whos at the pinnacle of your sport. And as a type A, competitive person, you always want to reach the top, the highest peak possible.

Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks introduces a new line of 3,000- to 7,000-pound capacity gas, LP gas and diesel pneumatic tire lift trucks, Models FG15K-35K and FD20K-35K. The operators compartment features an open-step frame, grab bar and anti-slip steel plates. An operator can choose a comfortable wheel position with a gas operated tilt steering wheel of more than 5 inches of movement. The instrument panel is mounted on the steering column and tilts with the wheel to provide monitoring of functions and alert the operator when service is needed.
The new 7FB electric pneumatic counterbalanced forklift from Toyota Industrial Equipment uses the combination of AC power and Toyotas exclusive System of Active Stability (SAS) to provide safe, efficient handling. The SAS feature actively monitors and controls the lift trucks movements to prevent the vehicle from tipping. The built-in system also helps reduce the chance of injuries and product damage caused from falling loads that have been tilted too far forward or backward. The zero-emissions AC motor contributes to the units smooth control, providing greater torque and acceleration than in similar trucks with DC motors. There is no lag time, and the unit offers excellent gradeability, allowing it to perform a broad range of applications. The low-maintenance AC motor system also features battery energy recovery using three forms of regenerative braking; plug braking for when the direction is switched between forward and reverse; coast control when the accelerator is released during travel; and foot braking for whenever the brake pedal is pressed while the unit is moving.

Prior to joining Hamilton Construction, Light was a project manager with Valley Construction Company for 23 years, primarily in the Warner Center complexes in Woodland Hills. Correa managed construction contracts at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme naval bases for Phillips National Company in Oxnard.
Data for June and July show the first signs of softening in the construction sector. According to seasonally adjusted data, the value of construction put in place in July was approximately at the same level as in June and thus 7.4% lower than in May. In the five months to May, the value of construction put in place was 38.7% higher than a year ago; in June and July the difference narrowed to 16.7%. Employment in the construction sector continued to rise. In 2006, the number of workers employed in the construction sector was 7.5% higher than in the previous year. In the first seven months of 2007 it surged by 11%. The hiring of foreign workers has also been on the increase (see SEM 7/2007: 11). The number of workers rose particularly in building completion and general construction, similarly as last year. In terms of worker status, sole proprietors and their employees recorded higher growth rates. Increasingly many firms face difficulties in finding labour. According to business trends in construction, 51% of construction firms reported “a shortage of skilled labour” as a limiting factor to production. If answers are weighted by the number of employees, this share is even higher (58%) - the highest in five years (since these data have been available). The shortage of skilled workers became a significant limiting factor in the second half of 2006 (see graph), coinciding with the boom in construction activity in that period.
The growth of construction activity was the in 15 years. This robust growth was again driven by the construction of motorways, in addition to the pick-up in the construction of non-residential buildings, which reached its highest level since 1999 The value of construction put in place surged by 15.3% over 2005. Growth in civil engineering totalled 16.8%. The construction of buildings rose by 14.0%, within that, non-residential construction was up 17.7% while residential construction increased by 2.6%. Based on detailed data about the issued building permits we estimate that the construction of wholesale and retail trade buildings and hotels picked up last year. In interpreting the data on the value of residential construction put in place we note that these figures exclude the activity of smaller companies (see the note under the table), in which, in our estimate, the construction of buildings is the main activity. The number of workers in the construction sector rose sharply in 2006, especially in the final quarter. The number of people employed in construction was on average 7.5% higher in 2006 than in 2005. In the fourth quarter alone, it increased by as much as 9.7% over the year before The number of employees by activity rose particularly in building completion, in the latter pari of the year it also increased in general construction In lerms of employee status, the number of individual private entrepreneurs and their employees rose the most last year. The number of planned dwellings and the total planned floor area of buildings continued to increase in the final quarter of 2006. The planned floor area of new buildings and extensions was 27.5% higher than in the same quarter of 2005 (43 8% for non-residential buildings and 16.9% for residential buildings) In 2006 as a whole, the total floor area of the planned buildings increased by 35.8%. within that by 19.7% for residential buildings and by 56 0% for non-residential buildings The building permits issued last year were granted for the construction of 8.260 new dwellings, which is 19.6% more than in 2005 and 47.0% more than the average of the previous seven years (since these data have been available)

This years mountain biking course for the Sunflower State Games will be a hilly affair Lyle Gooden is the commissioner of mountain biking for the Sunflower State Games. Last years mountain bike course for the Sunflower State Games was a flatter, faster trail than this one will be.
Staff writer Beautiful surroundings, fresh air and great exercise all combined into one activity sounds too good to be true. Yet thats exactly what mountain bike riders get when they take that fat-knobby- tired steed off the road and onto the trail. If you own a mountain bike and only ride it on the road, you may be missing half the fun. Wisconsin riders are especially lucky. The rural nature of the state provides at least 695 miles of marked off-road trails on state and county lands, said Bill Moorman of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

If the shift from film to digital photography has had a big impact on the way we take pictures, the effect its had on printing them is nothing short of revolutionary. When using 35mm film, most of us printed every frame that we shot. But now that were shooting pixels, the research company IDC has found that only 13 per cent of us print every single digital snapshot ” and nearly half of us dont print any at all. The easiest way to print your digital photos is to take the whole camera to a photolab and tell them what you want. Most photolabs now have the technology to read the memory cards on which digital cameras store your images. Theyll copy the images across and produce your snaps on the same machines they use for film printing.
PRINT THE LEGEND Photography and the American West Martha A. Sandweiss Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut, 2002. Illustrations, notes, index, xiii + 402 pp. $39.95.In the first three chapters of her book, Sandweiss focuses on early daguerreotypes taken by photographers during the Mexican-American War and by photographers employed to document early government expeditions to the West. She explains why the “static literalism” of these early daguerrean photographic images limited their acceptance by a public used to seeing more dramatic visual stories of the western frontier in drawings, panoramic paintings, lithographs, and engravings. In the second part of her book, Sandweiss examines how the replacement of daguerreotype with wet-plate photography affected the publics acceptance of photography. By selling multiple prints arid connecting images with words, photographers communicated more appealing visual narratives about the West and gained public acceptance of their work. Consequently, photography helped shape popular opinion about the region and was, in return, changed by the experience.Sandweisss enlightening and thought-provoking book is a case study in the use of photographs as historical evidence. The authors effort to demonstrate the importance of visual literacy and the value of visual documents, especially in historical research on the West, is certainly a goal that photograph curators and archivists will recognize and appreciate. Sandweisss work underscores the difficulties and challenges of using these complex records, but she also make a convincing argument that the result is well worth the effort.

For the exhibit, “Eternal Egypt: Masterworks of Ancient Art from The British Museum,” The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Arts entrance space, Kirkwood Hall, is converted into an Egyptian temple where visitors will find several massive statues, including a 6 1/2-foot tall one in sandstone of a seated Sety II. Behind it is the 52-inch high head of Amenhotep III, which came from a 26-foot tall quartzite statue in Thebes. This block of red granite is part of a gate adorned with rituals associated with Osorkon II, the King of Lower Egypt who ruled from 874-850 B.C.

Real Estate Investing 101 8019 Belair Road, Suite 10, Baltimore, MD 21236
The research reported in this issue is generally focused in two areas. First, several authors look at the role of publicly traded real estate securities in portfolio management for investors in direct real estate equities. Simon Stevenson, in The Long Term Advantages to Incorporating Indirect Securities in Direct Real Estate Portfolios examines the impact of REIT investment in both an optimal and a more probable world. His findings are interesting because they show that REITs bring improved performance to portfolios that look more like the NCREIF portfolio while their marginal value to an optimized direct portfolio may not be evident. The other interesting finding is a significant performance improvement brought by the addition of multi-national property securities to a domestic direct portfolio. Should investors approach an asset class in the context of their portfolio goals? Timothy Craft explores that issue in The Role of Private and Public Real Estate in Pension Plan Portfolio Allocation Choices. He examines the portfolio allocation choice in the context of a plans pension liabilities. One interesting result is a resolution of the dichotomy between standard optimization models that often argue for high real estate allocations and the typically lower allocations found in existing plan portfolios. Michael Seiler, James Webb and Neil Myer test the expectation that private real estate portfolios can be adjusted with real estate securities in Can Private Real Estate Portfolios Be Rebalanced/Diversified Using Equity REIT Shares? They conclude that REITs are a worthwhile addition to mixedasset portfolios but that they do not bring the ability to effectively rebalance or create marketneutral portfolios.

Self Hypnosis
Hypnosis, a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings, can be appropriate for a number of health conditions, especially ones with emotional or psychological components. While the success rate varies, many health care professionals recommend considering hypnosis for the following: Asthma: Studies suggest that hypnosis may be one effective treatment for asthma, especially when there are emotional and psychological factors involved. Childbirth: Hypnosis can help ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH estimates that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)

The new incentive program, which will operate in 41 counties, offers propane-powered forklift owners a variety of options to upgrade or replace existing equipment to reduce emissions. Because forklifts have a life of 15 to 17 years on average, early retirement of older forklifts could bring ultra-low-NOx forklifts into the state 10 years sooner than without the program. Rebates under the program can be as high as $7,500. RRC Chairman Victor Carrillo said the program is further evidence that sound business decisions are environmental stewardship need not be mutually exclusive. The RRCs propane consumer rebate program, created a decade ago, has operated continuously to issue over 41,000 rebates worth more than $9 million while substantially reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and carbon dioxide.

Ten reasons why companies should consider learning by gaming. Games are strong on motivation, visuals, participation, engagement and reinforcement - in short, everything that organisations struggle to deliver through traditional e-learning methods. Here are the ten reasons why gaming is on the rise:
(ProQuest Information and Learning:. denotes formula omitted.) The first way MCOs game their participating chiropractors is by holding them to either an arbitrary maximum number of treatments or a maximum number of treatments that comes from internal proprietary data. We have all heard from some colleague who has been reprimanded, put in a more restrictive provider tier or even removed from a panel because his or her average number of visits is higher than the MCOs average. I heard this from a colleague who only had five patients, with an average of nine visits per patient. I started thinking about this from a statistical standpoint. For example, if an MCO says it finds that its doctors have an average of six visits per patient, then would having an average of nine visits be out of line? If the way one compares the doctors average to the MCOs average is to say, “nine is larger than six,” the answer is clearly that the doctors average is larger than the MCOs. However, this is not proper statistically because the doctors average is for a sample, and that is being compared to the MCOs population. Sample data cannot be directly compared with population data.

Customer Service Training

We all recognize good customer service when we see it, and many people say they are seeing it less frequently. In a recent Yankelovich survey of 4,000 consumers, discount and department stores tied for 11th place out of 20 in rankings of customer service. I hear 20 horror stories for every compliment. From salespeople too busy chatting with co-workers to employees who ignore customers while they make personal phone calls, customer service has, over time, gotten a bad reputation. Training is often the first step companies take to improve customer service. But the American Society for Training and Development found that the retail industry spends an average of only seven hours training each new employee, the lowest among 14 types of businesses surveyed. Companies also attempt to improve customer service by changing their practices. They adopt systems in which one person handles a problem from beginning to end. Or they empower employees to respond to a wide variety of situations, sparing customers from hearing those dreaded words, Let me get my manager, or worse, Thats not my job.
Moore Norman Technology Center will train 150 new employees for Service Zone of Norman under the Oklahoma CareerTech systems Training for Industry Program, or TIP. Frank Coulter, Moore Norman Technology Center superintendent, said the firm is expanding its bank card customer service center in Norman. Moore Norman Technology Center instructors will provide training and training-related services, he said.
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Nov. 7, 1994–Employee involvement and training are the two activities most effective supporting quality and customer service initiatives now and over the next three years, according to a survey of human resource executives at 266 major North American companies conducted by Towers Perrin, the international management consulting firm. The respondents overwhelmingly agree that successful quality and customer service initiatives require not just the right attitude, but also expanded skills, knowledge and competencies. Management needs to provide employees the training they require, in terms of time and dollars, to do a better job of satisfying customers. Training for employees is the single most common activity used to support improved quality service, and it is used by every company participating in the survey. It also receives the highest satisfaction levels. Towers Perrin consultant Charles Cornwell says his service quality research shows a definite link between increased customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction and profitability once the employees understand customer expectations and are fully trained to meet these needs. Companies that can properly identify customer expectations and then give their employees the ability to satisfy customers are the ones who are achieving competitive advantage, Cornwell says.

Publication of randomised trials and systematic reviews in physiotherapy has increased spectacularly over the past few years. There are more than 2700 randomised trials and systematic reviews in physiotherapy, of which more than 800 have been published since 1997.[1] The evidence from the best of these trials confirms the value of some current physiotherapy practices and the ineffectiveness of others. Some little used interventions have been found to be remarkably beneficial. This article describes some advances in our understanding of physiotherapy that have arisen from recent clinical trials. With the help of several organisations and many volunteers, we have produced a web based database of randomised trials and systematic reviews in physiotherapy (PEDro).[1] Trials on the database are rated for methodological quality by using a modification of the Delphi list.[2] To produce this article, we scanned the database looking for recent systematic reviews or high quality clinical trials with clear conclusions and with potential to improve quality of life. We present selected findings of these trials and reviews.
The section of abbreviations serves to highlight the point that these will vary from country to country and to recognize the need for accuracy in order to prevent errors or misinterpretation. The chapters proceed very logically from basic science to the recognition and handling of patients with complications and comorbiditys. Emphasis is placed on the hip, knee, shoulder and foot/ankle. Very limited coverage for spine surgery patients is noted and post amputation physiotherapy is absent in this first edition. The comprehensive Index leads readers to the text quite readily. Economics and cost factors have been considered as pertains, for example, to the use of autologous blood transfusions, pressure sore prevention, care maps critical pathways, and the need for specific strategies for early discharged patients. A few of the named medications may not be found in USA formularies or the Physicians Desk Reference. Patient education is thoroughly discussed; but not the potential use of the Internet, diagnosis related support groups and bilingual materials. Without reservation, this book is recommended for physiotherapists and others who have the responsiblity of caring for orthopaedic patients of all ages and with a wide variety of conditions. Quality rehabilitation management has military implications, especially during worldwide engagements with multinational forces in support.
Quite simply, I wouldnt be able to walk again without the help of my physiotherapist, says Debs Paterson, 26, who almost lost mobility after an horrific car crash in November 2003. A year and a half later, after months of intensive physiotherapy, she can now walk without aid. Her physical recovery was down to a strategy especially tailored for her needs, taking into account the severe trauma that the rest of her body had suffered as well. The process that allowed Patersons physiotherapist to help her undergo such a physical boost was down, of course, to his training. But although scientific knowledge is paramount, a physiotherapist needs much more than anatomical precision: the nature of their work means that they must be able to take into account the state of mind of the individual they are treating. Hence, trainee physiotherapists must be well versed in the mores of psychology and sociology ” essential parts of a physiotherapy degree course. Physiotherapy programmes demand the ability to study, and to apply sound scientific and professional knowledge to problem- solving, says Jenny Carey, who has been an education officer at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for 26 years. She points out that even before potential physiotherapists start training, admissions tutors will be looking out for students with sensitivity, tolerance and good communication skills. These benefits come into sharp focus in the field of physiotherapy: where a doctor may see a patient a few times a year, physiotherapists are in constant contact with theirs ” for as long as it takes. Patience is not something to be treated lightly. When timetabling exercise and developing a strategy for the patient to get back to full mobility, they must take into account their family situation, personality, and what hopes and goals that patient wishes to fulfil. No mean feat, when your prime concern is also to diagnose and evaluate their medical condition.

LIFE isnt easy. It may sound pat, but its true. So therefore its a bit surprising that more of us dont have life coaches to guide us through the complex maze that is modern-day living. For those unfamiliar with a concept which is more common in America than it is in the UK, a “life coach” could be seen as the friend who always encourages you - a cross between a mentor and a practical adviser. OK, so you pay them for their advice, but they do always have your best interests at heart. For Fiona Reed, an Edinburgh-based coach who has been helping clients for almost two years, her role usually sees her operating as a “friend” with no vested interest and a pro-active approach to lifes problems. Forget psychiatrists and psychotherapists (after all, you know you cant blame your mother for absolutely everything), life coaching involves a positive approach to those issues in a persons life that require practical change.
Liverpool
Q: have a great job, great friends and a terrific husband and home, but I still feel a void in my life, like I need a change. What can I do to figure out what is missing? Los Angeles-based life coach Beth Rothenberg offers these suggestions: That something is different for all of us at different times in our lives. Some find it through meditation or yoga, some in journal writing, nature or religion. For others it means finding a purpose, doing something that benefits others. Finding your passion — something you love so much, you cant wait to get up in the morning — will help make you feel complete.

Grove will become part of Manitowocs Crane segment, adding its line of mobile hydraulic cranes, truck-mounted cranes, and boom trucks to Manitowocs existing inventory. Grove Investors, Inc., was also included in the acquisition.
Fioravanti says that Potain luffers are a prudent choice in congested city areas where swinging a hammerhead, or flat top crane is out of the question, due to either obstacles or air rights issues. The Potain MR605B is a luffing tower crane with a maximum jib length of 60 meters (197) and can lift 19,841 lbs at that radius. At 50 meters (164) the Potain can lift 28,600 lbs; at 40 meters (131) it can lift 38,580 lbs. and at 30 meters, 52,469 lbs. This crane is designed to freestand at 237 feet and when collared and tied in to a structure, literally the sky is the limit. The crane can be run in either 2-part of 4-part line configuration. Its a very reliable machine that we have used successfully on several jobs throughout the United States, and in 2007, we have five in Boston alone. LJ has taken the crane service and rental industry by storm, and at the expense of competitor market share, growing nearly 500% over the last three years, and has been listed on the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies in 2006 and 2007. In addition, LJ has been recognized by Providence Business News as one of the fastest growing Rhode Island-based companies two years in a row. Also, LJ plans to expand its already large Potain tower crane fleet with the addition of more cranes purchased directly from the manufacturer including the following: Potain MD485 hammerhead and MR605B and MR615B luffing tower cranes. The addition of multiple cranes will make LJs fleet among the youngest and most diverse in North America. Also, the additional commitment to Potain luffing tower cranes will bring LJs Potain fleet (MR405B, MR605B and MR615B) to more than twenty tower cranes, and more than sixty cranes overall, available for bare or operated rental anywhere in North America.

Wholesale Perfume

PerfumePerfume comes from the Latin per meaning through and fumum, or smoke. Many ancient perfumes were made by extracting natural oils from plants through pressing and steaming. The oil was then burned to scent the air. Today, most perfume is used to scent bar soaps. Some products are even perfumed with industrial odorants to mask unpleasant smells or to appear unscented.
ALL PERFUMES should be labelled with their contents to stop the widespread slaughter of musk deer for their scent pods, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) says in a report it will release today. The WWF is calling on the EU and the perfume industry to stop imports of wild musk from Russia until more research is carried out on their decline. It wants all perfume products to be clearly labelled to make it clear if they use “natural” musk. The report blames over exploitation and poaching for the “massive” decline in numbers. The trade is fuelled by a demand for the deers musk pods which can fetch pounds 28,000 per kilogram - making it one of the costliest products in the world. Stuart Chapman, international conservation officer forWWF-UK, said: “Consumers of perfumes have no way of knowing what they are buying.”
According to Angela Creasy, perfume buyer at Harrods, the key to buying perfume for someone else is identifying the family from which their preferred perfumes come. If they wear floral fragrances like Anais Anais or Diorella then look for something with similar notes. The four main families are floral, oriental, chypre and fougere. Most of the following shops will be able to advise you. Jo Malone is the current star of the fragrance world and her little shop in Londons Walton Street is the perfect place to start your search for the perfect Christmas scent (they also supply mail order). The shop specialises in colognes, which are lighter than full-blown perfumes, and bath oils and body lotions to enable customers to layer their chosen fragrances. Chic Chanel-esque bottles are filled with unlikely sounding, but superb smelling combinations: Nutmeg Ginger (pounds 28, 100ml), Lime Basil Mandarin (Jos signature fragrance) and Amber Lavender. Malone is also the pioneer of fragrance combining, which allows the customer to create his or her own signature scent. Fragrance Combining Kits start at pounds 33.50 and include a choice of seven different 30ml colognes. To combine a fragrance you either apply the stronger cologne, let it dry on the skin and then spray the lighter one on top, or, when using more than two, you simply spray them on different parts of the body; the aromas combine as they warm on the skin. If its a whiff of tradition youre after, then Penhaligons is the place to go. Try Hammam, their oldest aftershave - an unusual blend of lavender, sandalwood and Eastern rose. Penhaligons range of colognes, scents and aftershaves also includes a number of single flower fragrances which are exceptionally true, with none of the cloying sweetness associated with floral perfumes. Most unusual of all is Bluebell, (pounds 28, 50ml). Of their blended fragrances Cornubia should find favour with women who like warm, spicy perfumes from the oriental family (pounds 36, 50ml). Like Jo Malone, Penhaligons also sells selection packs, but these are for the indecisive and are not designed for mixing (pounds 18 for four miniature colognes). Their latest creation, Quercus, is fresh and clean and should appeal to men and women who like androgynous scents like CK1, but want something that wont be instantly recognised. The perfume halls at all the large department stores are the perfect hunting ground for those difficult types whose tastes, although adventurous, lie firmly within designer label territory. And top of the designer charts is Chanel No5, arguably the worlds most famous perfume, and Harrods annual Christmas best seller. But, although delicious, No5 is one of the block-busters. Better then to visit a Chanel boutique and try something rather different without forfeiting the label status: No22, Cuir de Russie, Gardenia, or Bois des Iles all come in the trademark black on white livery, and are only available direct from Chanel. Most infamous is Cuir de Russie which is an extraordinary and heady mix of leather, bergamot, mandarin and jasmine. When it was first launched in 1924 it was considered far too exotic and sensual for nicely brought-up young ladies. A bottle of the eau de parfum (pounds 86, 14ml), or eau de toilette (pounds 74, pounds 200ml) should make you or someone else very happy indeed. If money is no object, hurry to Harrods and snap up one of the last bottles of Guerlains Djedi which has been re-issued for Christmas. Harrods unpacked eight bottles at the start of the month and there are only a couple left. Jo Malone, 154 Walton Street, London SW3 (0171-581 1101). Being Bullied

Category: Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

For example, bullies attribute hostile intentions to people around them and therefore perceive provocation where it does not exist. “What are you staring at?” is a common opening line of bullies. For the bully, these perceived slights serve as justification for aggressive behavior.

In general, children who become the targets of bullies have a negative view of violence and go out of their way to avoid conflict. They tend to be “loners” who exhibit signs of vulnerability before being singled out by a bully. Being victimized leads these children-who are already lacking in self-esteem-to feel more anxious and thereby increase their vulnerability to further victimization. Being the target of a bully leads to social isolation and rejection by peers, and victims tend to internalize others negative views, further eroding their self-esteem. Although bullying actually lessens during adolescence, that is the period when peer rejection is most painful for victims. In a number of well-publicized cases (in Scandinavia, Japan, and Australia, as well as the United States), adolescents tormented by bullies have been driven to suicide.

Evidence indicates that bullying is not a phase a child will outgrow. In a long-term study of more than 500 children, University of Michigan researchers discovered that children who were viewed as the most aggressive by their peers at age eight grew up to commit more (and more serious) crimes as adults. Other studies indicate that, as adults, bullies are far more likely to abuse their spouses and children.

I recently took my daughter to shop for school clothes. I had to ask myself if the buyers of our local department stores are aware that our school district has a dress code. Jordan School District Policy AA419, #5, reads: Students shall not wear clothes that are immodest: e.g. short shorts, mini-skirts, bare midriffs, halter tops, spaghetti straps, tank shirts or similar clothing . . . skirts, dresses and shorts must be at least mid-thigh length or longer, when seated.

RENOVATIONSmall business owners and consultants agree that a well-conceived and carefully planned renovation effort can revitalize a business and provide it with much-needed room to grow in the future. But they also note that renovation periods can have a negative impact on productivity and profitability. Often, the inconveniences associated with office and building renovation projects make it a practical impossibility for businesses to maintain the exact same level of operations that they met during non-renovation periods. But experts indicate that small business ownerswhether they are building tenants or building ownerscan take several steps to ensure that the negative aspects of renovation are minimized.

KiteA kite is an unpowered, heavier-than-air flying device held to the earth by a line. The kite flies because wind resistance causes the air pressure under the kite to be greater than the air pressure above the kite, making the kite rise. The word kite is derived from the name of a type of bird belonging to the hawk family which is know for its graceful, soaring flight.A kite consists of three basic parts: the body, the line, and the bridle that attaches the line to the body. To enable the user to control the movement of the kite, the bridle must be attached to the body of the kite in at least two places.

Televisions, which are found in over 95% of American homes, are often located in areas where children spend a lot of time. Their design makes them unstable — most of their weight is located in the front of the picture tube, making them easy to tip forward. Their controls are located in the front, easily within the reach of inquisitive toddlers. During a seven year period, over 73 cases of toppling TVs were reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Twenty-eight of these children died from their injuries. The average age of the injured children was 36 months, with the ages ranging from one month to 11 years. These injuries and deaths are totally avoidable. Televisions must be placed on safe and secure surfaces where young children cant climb and cause the TV to topple onto them.

STEPHEN WARD The Law Society has been given the go-ahead to try to ban cut-price conveyancing by exploiting a loophole in the law. A scheme devised by the societys president, Martin Mears, and his deputy, Robert Sayer, would take away insurance from any firm which undercuts recommended fee levels for buying and selling a home.
HOMEBUYING is set to take another step forward in the online revolution when Scotlands first internet conveyancing service is launched this week. Conveyancing Direct, a telephone-based conveyancing service, is to launch a website which will allow customers to calculate online the total charges linked to buying a domestic property in Scotland. Graeme McCormick, founding partner of the Glasgow-based practice, says the speed at which charges can be calculated is a key part of the service. “If somebody goes and sees a property at the weekend, then they dont have to wait until Monday to contact a solicitor. They can go on to our website, do their sums, and theyre ready to go. Our online facility has been developed so that if, for example, someone wants to buy a property for #70,000, then they will be able to find out our fee, VAT, and calculate the registration charges and stamp duty. They then have the total figure to help them with the finances.”

Roaches, rats, spiders, mice, termites, fleas, ants, and bees-few people welcome them into their homes or offices. All unwanted creatures that infest households, buildings, or surrounding areas are pests that can pose serious risk to human health and safety. It is a pest controllers job to do away with them. You might envision pest controllers as workers wearing protective suits and spraying lethal pesticides. While this image may be accurate, it is incomplete; pest controllers do much more. This article describes pest controllers duties, where they work, employment numbers, job outlook, earnings, training requirements, and opportunities for advancement. It also lists sources for finding more information. Pest controllers locate, identify, repel, and destroy pests. They use their knowledge of pests habits, along with an arsenal of pest management techniques-applying chemicals, setting traps, operating equipment, and even modifying building structures-to alleviate pest problems. Restricted use pesticides are available only to professionals for the most severe infestations. Their application is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because of their potential harm to pest controllers, customers, and the environment.

This initiative also states that, it is illegal for any person, including employees of the federal, state, county or municipal government, to use or authorize the use of any steel-jawed leghold trap, padded or otherwise, to capture any game mammal, fur-bearing mammal, non-game mammal, protected mammal, or any dog or cat. Now, stop and reread that paragraph and think about it for a minute. This initiative decides for us that we cant control agricultural fur-bearing pests any l
